La Abogacía Española asiste al juicio contra el decano del Colegio de Abogados de Estambul y su Junta

El Consejo General de la Abogacía Española ha asistido hoy al juicio penal contra el decano del Colegio de Abogados de Estambul, İbrahim Kaboğlu, y los miembros de su Junta, celebrado en el campus de la prisión de Silivri. La presencia de la Abogacía Española responde al mandato del Observatorio Internacional de la Abogacía en Riesgo (OIAD), en una vista a la que han acudido más de 50 representantes de abogacías europeas y organizaciones de la profesión.

El Colegio de Abogados de Estambul fue distinguido el pasado año por la Abogacía Española con el Premio Derechos Humanos Carlos Carnicer, en la categoría de “Institución”, en reconocimiento a su firme compromiso con la defensa del derecho de defensa, la libertad de expresión y la independencia de la abogacía, pilares esenciales de la justicia y de la protección de los derechos humanos, incluso frente a la persecución y la presión institucional.

Tras exigir una investigación independiente por el asesinato de los periodistas kurdos Nazim Daştan y Cihan Bilgin en diciembre de 2024, el decano İbrahim Kaboğlu y varios miembros del Colegio fueron destituidos de sus cargos y procesados por presunta “propaganda terrorista”. Pese a ello, el Colegio de Abogados de Estambul mantiene su compromiso con la defensa de los valores fundamentales del Estado de Derecho.

La primera vista del proceso penal tuvo lugar en mayo de 2025. El decano y los miembros del Consejo del Colegio se enfrentan a penas de entre 3 y 12 años de prisión.

En la vista, İbrahim Kaboğlu ha agradecido el apoyo de los 83 representantes de abogacías y organizaciones profesionales presentes, mencionando expresamente al Consejo General de la Abogacía Española y al Observatorio Internacional de la Abogacía en Riesgo “por su respaldo a la profesión y al Estado de Derecho”.

La Abogacía ha querido estar presente en esta vista para apoyar y denunciar cualquier irregularidad que afecte al derecho de defensa.

The Spanish Bar Council attends the Trial Against the President of the Istanbul Bar Association and Its Board

The General Council of Spanish Bars attended today the criminal trial against the President of the Istanbul Bar Association, İbrahim Kaboğlu, and the members of its Board, held on the campus of Silivri Prison. The presence of the Spanish Bar responds to the mandate of the International Observatory of Lawyers at Risk (OIAD), at a hearing attended by more than 50 representatives of European bars and professional organizations.

Last year, the Istanbul Bar Association was honored by the Spanish Bar with the Carlos Carnicer Human Rights Award, in the “Institution” category, in recognition of its firm commitment to the defense of the right to defense, freedom of expression, and the independence of the legal profession—essential pillars of justice and the protection of human rights, even in the face of prosecution and institutional pressure.

After calling for an independent investigation into the murder of Kurdish journalists Nazim Daştan and Cihan Bilgin in December 2024, President İbrahim Kaboğlu and several members of the Bar Association were removed from their positions and prosecuted on alleged charges of “terrorist propaganda.” Despite this, the Istanbul Bar Association maintains its commitment to defending the fundamental values of the Rule of Law.

The first hearing of the criminal proceedings took place in May 2025. The President and the members of the Bar’s Council face prison sentences ranging from 3 to 12 years.

At the hearing, İbrahim Kaboğlu thanked the support of the 83 representatives of bar associations and professional organizations present, expressly mentioning the General Council of Spanish Bars and the International Observatory of Lawyers at Risk “for their support for the profession and the Rule of Law.”

The Spanish Bar wished to be present at this hearing to provide support and to denounce any irregularities affecting the right to defense.
